The trick is doing both without getting sappy, because the person retiring is usually the one who hates a fuss. What to write inside a retirement card
Two sentences. One about what they did, one about what comes next. "Thirty years of making this place run, and now the lake gets you full time." Sign it. If it is a group card, the sentiment on the front does the heavy lifting and everyone else adds a line.
For the person who is retiring reluctantly, or because of health, skip the jokes and use "The best is yet to come" or "And now the fun begins" with something kind inside. For the person who could not wait, the funny section is the right call.
