What to write in a graduation card
The best graduation cards do one of two things: name something specific you watched them do, or say something true about what comes next. I watched you rewrite that essay four times beats you'll go far every time, because the graduate has already read "you'll go far" on eleven other cards.
Three lines is a complete card:
- Congratulate them, briefly. One sentence. They know what they did.
- Name the specific thing. The late nights, the subject they switched to, the year they nearly quit. This is the line they reread.
- Point forward without pressure. "I can't wait to see what you pick next" is warmer than a prediction about their career.
And if there is money in the card, still write something. The cash gets spent by August; the note is the part that ends up in a box.
What to write for each kind of graduation
- High school. They are being handed a lot of advice this month. Skip yours. Tell them one thing you admire about who they already are, not who they might become.
- College. Acknowledge the work and the cost of it. Humor lands well here, and so does treating them as an adult for the first time in writing.
- Trade school or certification. Be specific about the skill. "You can wire a house" is a better card than "congratulations on your achievement."
- Kindergarten or middle school. Keep it silly and short, and write it to the kid rather than to the parents.
- A graduate who took the long way. Night classes, a restart, ten years later. Say the length out loud. That is the accomplishment, and most cards politely ignore it.
How to sign a graduation card
Match the closing to the distance: Love for family, So proud of you for anyone you watched grow up, Cheers or Congratulations again for a friend's kid. If you're a teacher or coach, sign with the year or the class, Mr. Alvarez, AP Bio '26, because in fifteen years that is what makes the card make sense.
