Valentine Rubber Stamps for Handmade Cards

The cards worth keeping are the ones somebody sat down and made. Unity's Valentine rubber stamps are hand-drawn by our artists and manufactured in-house in New London, Minnesota, from deeply etched red rubber that stamps crisp on the first card and the fortieth. That matters more on this holiday than most, because Valentine's is a batch-making occasion.

If you have shopped Valentine stamps before, you know most of what is out there is variations on one heart. These are not that. Our artists draw animals with opinions, gnomes with puns, hand-lettered sentiments and full scenes, and the sets are sized for real cards rather than scrapbook pages.

Sets built for batch making

If you are making one card, anything works. If you are making twenty-eight for a second-grade class, the set matters. Look for one small focal image paired with several sentiments. That combination lets you stamp the same image across a whole run of cards and rotate the words, which is faster and looks more considered than twenty-eight identical cards. Most of our Valentine sets are built this way on purpose.

The other batch-making trick is a background stamp. One pass across a panel of cardstock covers ground fast and gives you something to layer a focal image and sentiment on top of. It is the difference between a card that looks handmade and one that looks unfinished.

Romantic, funny, or somewhere in between

Valentine's cards split roughly three ways at Unity. There are the sincere ones: hearts, florals, tender sentiments for a spouse or partner. There are the funny ones, which sell every bit as well: reluctant cats, gnomes with puns, and sentiments for couples whose love language is mild insult. And there is Galentine's, which has quietly become its own occasion. February 13th, cards for friends and sisters rather than partners.

Valentines for the kids

Classroom valentines are their own project: high volume, short deadline, and a list of names taped to the fridge. Pun-forward animal sets do the most work here: owls, bunnies, turtles, dinosaurs, gnomes. The joke does the talking and you only need a name and a signature. Stamp onto cardstock, punch a hole, tie on a lollipop, done. Baby & Kids designs pair well with these.

Ink, color and a shortcut worth knowing

Valentine's is the one holiday where the palette is basically decided for you, which is freeing. Red and pink dye inks on white or kraft cardstock will carry almost any design here. If you want the sentiment to lift off the card, heat emboss it: stamp in pigment ink, cover with embossing powder, tap off the excess and hit it with a heat gun. Gold or white on a red panel takes about forty seconds and looks like considerably more effort than it was.

The shortcut: stamp your sentiment onto a strip of white cardstock rather than directly onto the card front. If it goes wrong you have lost a strip, not the whole card, and a mounted strip with a little shadow under it reads as a deliberate design choice. On a batch of thirty, that one habit will save you more cards than anything else.

Beyond February

Most of what works for Valentine's works the rest of the year too. Heart and love designs carry anniversaries, weddings, new babies and just-because cards; the sentiments about missing someone work for long-distance friendships in any month.
